Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka. Colombo is also the commercial and financial center of Sri Lanka. The name "Colombo" was first introduced by the Portuguese in the year 1505. Mount Lavinia is a beach located 12 km from Colombo. Mount Lavinia was a famous beach even during the colonial times.

The great majority of Sri Lankan corporations have their head offices in Colombo. The Viharamahadevi Park is the largest park located next to the National Museum. The Colombo Metropolitan Region (CMR) encompasses the country's governmental capital Kotte and Colombo. Welikada Prison is one of the largest maximum-security prisons in the country located in Colombo.

Wolvendaal Church is Colombo's oldest Dutch church. Its floor tiles are made from tombstones from the Dutch church in the Fort, and were brought here in 1813. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is the famous Buddhist temple and it is believed to be at the spot where the Buddha preached 2000 years ago.
